Afterschool Clubs

The clubs will start the week of Feb. 18 and go through the week of May 23. There will be no clubs the weeks of March 17 (parent/teacher conference) and March 24 (spring break).

You will receive the application forms either on Friday Jan 25 or Tuesday Jan 29 (Monday is a holiday) depending on the teacher. The forms are due by Friday Feb 1. You will know which club your kids got
into, starting Feb. 6 (again depending on when your classroom teacher checks her/his mailbox).

And please remember: the release forms MUST be signed and returned to us. We are asked to be strict about this. It's a liability thing. (Spread the word on this one too.)

The fantastic news is that we have 18 clubs this term. Wait till you see the choices...!

Easy ways to make money for Alvarado

Thanks so much for participating. Alvarado earned over $4,000 last year, and we're hoping to do even better this year. And tell your friends, family, colleagues, and casual acquaintances to sign up too. They don't need to live in San Francisco. As long as they live in the US, they can contribute to Alvarado's fundraising efforts.

Contact Carmen if you have questions.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to get involved at Alvarado all year long and we need a lot of help to keep all the great programs and activities going. Please contact the PTA Volunteer Coordinator, Christina James. She is here to support you in your efforts to help the school. She welcomes your ideas about how to communicate volunteering needs better as well as your ideas on ways to help our school.

Look in the newsletter for their contact information and for different ways to volunteer at and for Alvarado. They will post opportunities to help on the bulletin board in the front hall and the Flip chart at the top of the stairs. You can also join the Alvarado School Yahoo Group as they use that to send out volunteering opportunities from time to time.

Valet Zone: Any parents who could pitch in and help with the valet zone in the morning would be making a difference in helping our school community. This is an easy way to keep it safe at school and meet and greet lots of other Alvarado families. The time is from 7:35 to 7:50 when the bell rings. Drop-in help is fine.

Library help: Sometimes it just adds up...the library could use a little help with catching up on shelving books. If you've got a few minutes to spare after drop off or around pick-up come on in.

State Budget Cuts

Please contact your Senators, Governor and assembly people:

Last week, the Governor proposed a budget that cuts funding for public schools by $4.8 billion. Use this link to send a letter to your Assemblymember to oppose these reductions because they shortchange our children and compromise our future. On the same day the Governor released his budget, a major national study gave California a D+ in school funding. And that was before this new round of cuts.

It's clearly going to be a tough budget year, but we all know our schools are already underfunded. The latest Education Week report ranked California 46th in the nation in per-pupil funding, nearly $2000 below the
national average.

Forward this email to friends and ask them to get involved - we need to make it clear that we're united behind our schools. Thank you for taking the time to make a difference for our children.

Sample Letter:

Subject Line: Take a stand for schools in the budget

Dear [Your Assemblymember's Name Here],

California schools cannot afford the Governor's proposed budget cuts.

Our public schools are already funded well below the national average, any reduction will leave our students even further behind.

Research shows that our schools need high quality teachers, administrators, updated facilities and textbooks. Making cuts to an already underfunded system is not going to help.

2008 was supposed to be the year of education reform. I encourage you to be a champion of our schools and build upon the commitment to education expressed by the Legislature last year.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
